The Carolina Panthers have released starting inside linebacker Josey Jewell just before the start of training camp, as he recovers from a concussion suffered in December. Jewell was present at OTAs but decided to make this move to focus on his recovery without taking up a roster spot.
Jewell’s departure leaves the team looking to build depth at the inside linebacker position. The Panthers signed Christian Rozeboom, an LA Rams starter, and drafted Trevin Wallace in the third round last year. However, the position is still relatively open outside of this duo.
General manager Dan Morgan emphasized the need for competition among linebackers to improve their play. With some young, talented players on the roster, the team aims to develop its core through continuous growth and improvement.
In a corresponding move, the Panthers have signed former Seahawks tight end Tyler Mabry.
