Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva Undergoes Emergency Surgery

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 79, has undergone emergency surgery to ease bleeding in his skull after a fall he suffered two months ago. The surgery, which was deemed “uneventful,” aimed to drain a hematoma caused by the October incident.

Mr. Lula was admitted to Hospital Sírio-Libanês in Brasília with a headache and underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that confirmed an intracranial hemorrhage. He was then transferred to Hospital Sírio-Libanês in São Paulo for the procedure.

The fall, which occurred when Mr. Lula was moving off a stool to cut his nails, resulted in several stitches on the back of his head. Initially, doctors advised him to avoid traveling by plane, causing him to cancel conferences in Russia and Azerbaijan.

However, in November, tests showed that Mr. Lula’s condition had stabilized, allowing him to resume normal activities, including air travel. Despite this, the incident has left a lingering impact on his health, prompting emergency surgery.
