The Green Bay Packers have unveiled their latest alternate/throwback uniform and helmet, paying tribute to the team’s history as a publicly owned entity. According to team historian Cliff Christl, 1923 was a pivotal year for the team, as it marked the first time they became publicly owned, raising $5,000 to keep the team afloat during a difficult period.
The navy-blue jerseys with dark gold numbers and stripes were re-created from black-and-white photographs and articles from the Green Bay Press-Gazette at the time. The throwback helmets were hand-painted to resemble the old leather helmets from the 1920s. While no specific date has been announced, the new look will be debuted during a home game this season.
Historian Christl emphasized the significance of 1923, stating that it was “as big a year as there’s been in Packer history” and highlighting how selling stock allowed the team to overcome numerous challenges. The Packers’ decision to adopt this throwback design is a nod to their rich history and the contributions of fans who helped secure the team’s future.
