Nick Ahmed Announces Retirement After 15-Year MLB Career

Nick Ahmed, a two-time Gold Glove award winner and 12-year MLB veteran, has announced his retirement from professional baseball. The 35-year-old shortstop made the announcement on social media earlier today.

Ahmed played for several teams during his career, including the Diamondbacks, Giants, Dodgers, Padres, and Rangers. He is best known for his defensive skills, which earned him numerous accolades throughout his career. In his prime, Ahmed was one of the top defenders in baseball, and he continued to impress with his strong glove work even in later seasons.

Although Ahmed’s offense wasn’t as consistent, he still managed to have some successful seasons, including a 96 wRC+ in 2020. His defense was consistently elite, earning him +118 OAA (outs above average) since Statcast began tracking the stat in 2016.

The Diamondbacks designated Ahmed for assignment in September due to injuries and his declining offense. He split the 2024 season between the Giants, Dodgers, and Padres before making his final appearance with the Rangers.

Ahmed’s career statistics include a .233/.286/.370 slash line, +118 OAA, and +80 DRS (defensive runs saved). He will be remembered as one of the greatest defensive shortstops in baseball history.
