The Las Vegas Raiders have released defensive tackle Christian Wilkins after a long deliberation process due to the injury that has left him out of commission for most of the season. The team cited “failure to maintain his physical condition” as the reason for voiding the remaining $35.2 million guaranteed on his contract.
Wilkins, who signed a four-year deal worth $110 million last offseason, underwent surgery in October but chose not to undergo another procedure despite sources indicating that he needed it. This decision led to the Raiders releasing him with the designation of terminated vested veteran.
The team’s coach Pete Carroll stated that they have extremely high expectations for their players and want those who are on board with their vision. With Wilkins’ release, the competition at defensive line has become more open, allowing multiple players to compete for starting spots.
Third-year edge rusher Tyree Wilson is expected to play a key role in this rotation, alongside new additions Tonka Hemingway and JJ Pegues. The Raiders have also worked out veteran defensive tackle Quinton Jefferson and have Adam Butler on a three-year extension.
