First West Nile Virus Mosquitoes Detected in Jasper County

Health officials in Jasper County, Illinois, have identified a batch of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus. The positive pool was collected on July 23 and testing began in May.

As temperatures rise, mosquito activity tends to spike at dawn and dusk. To protect yourself, wear long sleeves and pants outdoors, apply EPA-approved repellents, and eliminate standing water around your home.

While most illnesses caused by West Nile are mild (fever, headaches, body aches), those over 50 years old face higher risks, including meningitis, encephalitis, and potential lingering side effects.
