A mysterious illness, dubbed “disease X,” has claimed over 30 lives, mostly children, in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Panzi region. The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed 406 cases of the disease, with a mortality rate of about 8%. The actual number of deaths could be higher, with some reports suggesting as many as 143 fatalities.
The outbreak started circulating in October and is being investigated by a team of scientists from the WHO. Researchers believe the disease presents symptoms similar to respiratory infections, including fever, headache, cough, runny nose, and body aches. The WHO has sent rapid response teams to collect samples for laboratory testing and coordinate a response.
The community deaths are of concern due to limited communication infrastructure and no functional laboratory in the region. Malaria is considered a potential causal factor, and malnutrition may be contributing to the cases. Experts warn of the risk of further spread and have expressed concerns about possible airborne transmission. While the global risk level remains low, the proximity to Angola’s border has raised concerns about cross-border transmission.
