Southwest Airlines Eyes Lounges, Long-Haul Flights to Boost Competitiveness

Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan hinted that the company may introduce airport lounges and expand its fleet to serve longer-haul destinations in an effort to become more competitive with other US airlines. The move comes as the carrier faces lower-than-expected earnings, despite recently introducing checked bag fees and extra legroom seating.

In a recent earnings call, Jordan stated that the airline’s current initiatives are just the beginning of its product strategy evolution. He emphasized that Southwest will continue to adapt to meet the needs of both existing and future customers. Among potential changes, lounges and longer-haul flights could become part of the airline’s overhaul.

While no specific plans have been announced, Jordan acknowledged that the airline is listening to customer feedback and working to make Southwest a one-stop shop for travelers. The carrier has already introduced checked bag fees and will begin offering assigned seating in 2026, with tickets going on sale next week. With earnings below expectations, the introduction of lounges or longer-haul flights could mark an important step forward for the airline’s competitiveness.
