Lionel Messi and Inter Miami teammate Jordi Alba have received one-match bans after skipping the Major League Soccer All-Star game in Austin, Texas. The players missed the match to avoid disciplinary action, as per league rules.
The MLS commissioner stated that it was a “very difficult decision” but had to be enforced due to a long-standing policy regarding participation in the All-Star Game. Messi has been an integral part of Inter Miami’s success this season, scoring 18 goals in 18 appearances.
The duo will now miss Miami’s home league fixture against FC Cincinnati on Saturday. Coach Javier Mascherano attributed Messi’s fatigue to his extensive playing schedule, saying players often experience discomfort when playing every three days.
Despite the suspension, Messi and Alba will still have time to prepare for their next match and make a comeback in the league.
