Archaeologists discovered a gruesome discovery at the Gran Dolina cave site in northern Spain. A human neck bone from a child aged two to four years old was found with clear butchery marks. The vertebra was among other bones and teeth belonging to Homo antecessor, considered the last common ancestor of both Homo sapiens and Neanderthals. This species lived between 1.2 million and 800,000 years ago.
