Red Sox Scramble to Fill Needs as Orioles Make Trades

The Boston Red Sox are among the four American League East teams making a playoff push this season. Meanwhile, the Baltimore Orioles have started making moves at the trade deadline. On Friday, they traded relief pitcher Gregory Soto to the New York Mets for pitching prospects Wellington Arecena and Cameron Foster.

Soto, 30, has been a key player in the Mets’ bullpen, posting a 3.96 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 36 innings this season. His arrival will help address a reeling bullpen that had allowed a 4.71 ERA over the last 30 days.

The Mets are Soto’s fourth team in four years, having previously played for the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies. With the Orioles’ recent slump, they’re likely looking to make other moves before the deadline. General manager Mike Elias confirmed that they’re listening to offers on their veteran players, including left-handed pitcher Seranthony Dominguez.

Boston may be interested in acquiring some of these players, particularly first baseman Ryan O’Hearn or pitchers Charlie Morton, Zach Eflin, and Tomoyuki Sugano, who could provide rotation depth. With the trade deadline approaching, the Red Sox are likely to make some moves to bolster their roster.
