Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, a pro-Palestinian Lebanese fighter, has returned to Beirut after spending 40 years in a French prison for his involvement in the killings of two diplomats. The 74-year-old was released early on Friday and boarded a flight to Lebanon, following a court ruling that deemed his detention “disproportionate”. Abdallah’s release marks the end of one of France’s longest detentions involving a political prisoner. He has never expressed regret for his actions and insists he is a “fighter” who has battled for Palestinian rights. Abdallah was welcomed at Beirut’s airport by family members and supporters, with many hailing him as a symbol of resistance.
