A government middle school building in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar district collapsed on Friday, killing seven children and injuring at least 21. The incident occurred when students were about to start the school assembly.
The cause of the collapse remains unclear. However, local authorities have launched an investigation into the accident. Frantic parents, teachers, and locals joined the rescue effort, sifting through debris to free trapped students.
The school has around 35 students, with all seven fatalities being from seventh and eighth grade. The injured have been taken to two local hospitals for treatment. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office expressed his condolences, calling it “tragic” and “deeply saddening,” and promising that authorities are providing support to the affected families.
