Patriots coach Mike Vrabel and his team slowed things down on Friday with a walkthrough practice in steamy Foxborough, focusing on third-down work and defense. The players showed up without helmets or cleats, opting for hats instead.
Quarterbacks Drake Maye, Joshua Dobbs, and Ben Wooldridge received play calls through the communication system, while Carlton Davis, who missed Thursday’s practice due to maintenance, was back in uniform. Vrabel stated that Davis’ absence wasn’t unexpected, but rather a part of the plan to give him what he needs.
The defense utilized various nickel and dime looks with three safeties and three corners depending on the rep. K’Lavon Chaisson spent over 20 minutes working out after practice, emphasizing his gratitude for any chance to contribute. Coach Vrabel acknowledged that some players may be missing time due to installation, but stressed the importance of staying engaged and learning during that period.
Rookie Jared Wilson continued to rotate into team periods as a potential interior lineman. He took reps at left and right guard, as well as center. Vrabel praised Wilson’s ability to learn two positions mentally and grasp them quickly.
Linebacker Christian Elliss compared his coach to a “golden retriever,” saying he’s fun to be around and very smart. Meanwhile, Keion White focused on the importance of winning and getting better under Vrabel’s guidance. Other players spent time with the media after practice, including Kyle Dugger, Garrett Bradbury, Marcus Jones, and Christian Gonzalez.
The team is expected to ramp up their practice again on Saturday with an open workout for the public and media.
