Kaden Groves Wins Tour de France Stage 20 with Solo Attack

Australian cyclist Kaden Groves has claimed his maiden Tour de France victory with a stunning solo attack on stage 20, beating Dutchman Frank van den Broek by 54 seconds.

Groves burst into tears after crossing the finish line, overwhelmed by the pressure of winning on the hilly 184.2km course from Nantua to Pontarlier. This was his first professional victory in this fashion, after normally competing as a sprinter.

Fellow Australian Harry Sweeny had attempted a solo attack earlier, but was reeled back in by the lead group with 24km remaining. Meanwhile, Romain Grégoire and Iván Romeo both fell on a wet descent, splitting the lead group.

Groves took advantage of the chaos to break away solo with 16km remaining. He is now the third different stage winner from Alpecin-Deceuninck and the 114th rider to win a stage at all three grand tours.

Tour leader Tadej Pogačar finished safely in the peloton, sealing his third King of the Mountains classification prize. With a 4:24 lead over Jonas Vingegaard, Pogačar is likely to seal his third Tour de France crown on Sunday’s final stage in Paris.
