A resident in Fort Collins has contracted the West Nile virus, marking Larimer County’s first human case of the season. The infected individual is recovering well. According to city data, the mosquito infection rate in Fort Collins is 11 times higher than the historical average this year.
The outbreak comes as a reminder that the risk of West Nile infection is higher due to a greater percentage of infected mosquitoes. Mosquito spraying has already begun in Fort Collins, with additional rounds planned for central and south areas.
Residents are advised to take precautions to reduce their risk of getting West Nile, including using EPA-registered insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, avoiding outdoor activities during peak biting times, and draining standing water from their yards. According to the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment, those 55 and older or with certain health conditions are at higher risk of developing serious symptoms.
