France Frees Pro-Palestinian Convict After 41 Years in Jail

A French court ordered the release of Georges Abdallah, a Lebanese teacher convicted of complicity in the murders of two diplomats in 1987. Abdallah, 74, was arrested in 1984 and sentenced to life for his alleged role in the attacks, which killed American diplomat Charles Ray and Israeli diplomat Yakov Barsimantov. He had been denied parole since 1999 due to pressure from the US and Israel. However, an appeals court ruled that Abdallah’s detention was “disproportionate” and said he no longer posed a threat, paving his way for release. Despite being held for nearly four decades, Abdallah remains a symbol of the Palestinian cause among activists on the Marxist-Leninist left.
