Researchers Warn of Impending Earthquake Risk near Dawson City

Scientists have discovered a dormant fault line near Dawson City that could trigger powerful earthquakes. A new study led by researchers at the University of Victoria used satellite and lidar data to reveal signs of rupture along a 130-kilometre stretch, about 20 kilometres from the city.

The Tintina fault has ruptured multiple times over the past 2.6 million years, with the most recent event occurring more than 12,000 years ago. Researchers estimate that the fault has built up strain, which could result in a quake exceeding magnitude 7.5. This would cause severe shaking in Dawson City and potentially disrupt highways, mining operations, and landslide-prone slopes.

The federal seismic hazard model does not currently list the Tintina fault, but researchers are sharing their findings with local governments to support emergency planning. The discovery highlights the need for updated risk assessments and preparedness measures in the region.
