Mangold initially considered pre-recording vocals but decided to go with the live performance after being impressed by Chalamet’s acting. This approach allowed the actors to hone their singing and instrument-playing skills, which benefited the film’s sound quality.
The sound team used a combination of practical microphones from the period and strategically placed mics to capture Chalamet’s performances. Despite some initial concerns about using live recordings, Mangold doubled down on the approach, resulting in an impressive live performance that captured the spirit of Dylan’s music.
Chalamet’s singing was praised for its accuracy, with the sound team able to capture four distinct voices and deliver characterful performances. The film’s supervision of music editor Ted Caplan noted that every single song was recorded from top to tail, including the climactic Newport Folk Festival 1965 concert.
