EU Urges Additional Aid for Nigeria’s Malnourished Children

European Union Ambassador to Nigeria Gautier Magnot has called for increased efforts to help Nigeria address malnutrition affecting two million children in the North-East and North-West regions. The ambassador stated that the US withdrawal of aid has created a significant gap in providing therapeutic food for affected children.

Currently, 3.5 million Nigerian children suffer from severe acute malnutrition, with two million in the northwest and northeast regions. Magnot emphasized the need for additional assistance, particularly through the importation of rapid-use therapeutic food and milk to meet demands.

The ambassador highlighted the importance of therapeutic milk, which can save babies who are too weak to eat on their own. He noted that stabilisation centres, while overstretched, require supplies of therapeutic food to support these children.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has warned that malnutrition is depriving nearly 40 per cent of Nigerian children under five of their full potential. Magnot’s call for increased aid comes as the situation continues to worsen due to climate change and insecurity.
