Marvel’s Fantastic Four series has taken its first steps into the world of film. The new movie, set on Earth-828, is an optimistic future take on the classic comic book heroes. Production designer Kasra Farahani drew inspiration from Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” and architects such as Eero Saarinen and Oscar Niemeyer to create a retro-futuristic Manhattan.
The film’s set design team transformed London’s Pinewood Studios into a mid-century New York, featuring iconic buildings like the RKO Palace and Embassy Theater. Farahani aimed for a mix of historical accuracy and futuristic elements, with half a dozen retro-futuristic cars that blended seamlessly with 1960s vehicles. The Baxter Building, where Reed Richards’ lab is located, was inspired by Saarinen’s architecture, featuring a vaulted ceiling and three brightly colored circles designating different functions.
Farahani also incorporated personal touches into the set design, including a nursery designed for Sue Storm and Reed Richards’ expected baby. As he was expecting his own child at the time of filming, this experience helped him bring a sense of warmth and coziness to the Baxter apartment. The set’s color palette, featuring Eames-inspired colors, adds to its whimsical feel.
The Fantastic Four’s retro-futuristic NYC set is a testament to Farahani’s vision for an optimistic future take on the classic characters. With its blend of historical accuracy, futuristic elements, and personal touches, this set is sure to leave a lasting impression on fans of the franchise.
