Director Guillermo del Toro reveals the drastic transformation his new “Frankenstein” star, Jacob Elordi, underwent to become the iconic monster. With only nine weeks to perfect the look after Andrew Garfield dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, del Toro and makeup artist Mike Hill had to reimagine the character’s design.
The original plan, which took nine months to finalize, was scrapped when Garfield stepped down. Del Toro praises Elordi for his physicality, saying he has a “looseness” that worked perfectly for the creature. Hill adds that Elordi’s demeanor is innocent but can be menacing in certain moments, making him an ideal fit.
Elordi himself expressed gratitude for the experience, stating that meeting del Toro was serendipitous and allowed him to shine on set. The film, set to premiere at Venice Film Festival, will screen in competition and compete for the Golden Lion before streaming on Netflix in November.
