The United States will not participate in an upcoming UN conference on the two-state solution, which Washington views as “unproductive” and “ill-timed.” Instead, it will continue leading real-world efforts to end the conflict and achieve a permanent peace. Secretary Rubio described the conference as a “reward for terrorism” that undermines diplomatic efforts.
The conference’s timing has raised concerns, coming as it does during delicate diplomatic efforts to negotiate a ceasefire. The US fears the event will only prolong the war, embolden Hamas, and further entrench its position against a peaceful resolution.
President Macron’s recent announcement recognizing a Palestinian state was met with approval from Hamas, fueling concerns about counterproductive gestures that hinder peace talks. These actions may encourage Hamas to continue obstructing a ceasefire, undermining US diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the suffering in Gaza and secure the release of hostages.
