T-Mobile Launches Satellite Connectivity Service for iPhones and Android Handsets

T-Mobile has launched its T-Satellite service, offering carrier-supported satellite connectivity to compatible iPhone and Android handsets. The service connects users to Starlink satellites, providing internet access outside the regular cellular network.

The first network to support this technology is T-Mobile, with a monthly fee of $10 for customers on other networks. Verizon and AT&T are expected to offer their own versions of the service soon.

T-Satellite aims to end dead zones by providing coverage in areas where traditional cellular connectivity is unavailable. It uses 650+ satellites in orbit to connect users almost anywhere they can see the sky, with capabilities including texting and SOS messaging for compatible iPhones and Android handsets.

Initial reviews have praised the service’s ease of use, allowing phones to connect to the satellite network without needing to point at it. The limited bandwidth means that images take time to upload, but users can send messages using MMS, which includes photos.

T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert said the new service marks a huge step in ending dead zones and providing connectivity for those who love to explore or live in remote areas. The service is now available for anyone with compatible handsets, including most current Android phones and all iPhones from iPhone 13 onwards.

While Starlink experienced a temporary outage affecting tens of thousands of users, the service has been restored. T-Mobile customers with the Experience Beyond service get this new capability included, while others can access it for $10 per month.
