EU Flags High Risk of Counterfeit Products on Temu Marketplace

Temu users in the European Union face a “high risk” of finding counterfeit products while shopping on the platform, according to preliminary findings from the European Commission. The investigation uncovered baby toys, small electronics, and other items that are deemed unsafe or non-compliant.

The EU had previously designated Temu as a “Very Large Online Platform” under its Digital Services Act, which holds online platforms accountable for hosting illegal goods and services. The commission is now scrutinizing Temu’s compliance with its rules, which could result in fines of up to 6% of the platform’s global annual revenue.

The investigation also focuses on Temu’s business practices, including its recommendation systems and data access for researchers.
