James Cameron’s highly anticipated “Avatar: Fire and Ash” trailer is finally here, revealing a new chapter in the beloved franchise. The third installment returns to Pandora, introducing the Mangkwan Clan, also known as the Ash People, led by fierce leader Varang (Oona Chaplin). With the ability to manipulate fire, Varang is an adversary to Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) and her family.
The trailer shows a destroyed ash-covered home, hinting at a volcanic eruption that has ravaged the Mangkwan Clan. This stark departure from 2022’s “The Way of Water” sets the tone for a new story. Cameron described Varang as hardened by her people’s incredible hardship, willing to do anything to protect them.
Returning characters include Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Kate Winslet (Ronal), Jack Champion (Spider), and Sigourney Weaver’s daughter Kiri. The Wind Traders, a nomadic Na’vi clan traveling airborne ships drawn by massive jellyfish-like creatures, also make an appearance.
The trailer suggests a tense encounter between Varang and the humans, as well as Jake Sully being captured. “Fire and Ash” hits theaters on December 19, with Cameron aiming to evolve beyond simplistic narratives in this installment. The fourth and fifth installments are expected in 2029 and 2031, respectively.
