UK Ties with Trump Offer Keir Starmer Access to World Leader

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak did not participate in a recent visit by US President Donald Trump to Scotland, as he was on holiday. However, his predecessor, Sir Keir Starmer, met with the president during a trip to Turnberry golf course.

Trump’s “private” visit included a private dinner and multiple meetings with journalists. The talks covered various topics such as turbines, Germany, free speech, and China. Starmer appeared to be well-prepared for the conversations, defending his stance on immigration policy and Gaza.

Downing Street views the access provided by Trump as valuable, particularly regarding the president’s views on Gaza, which they see as a shift towards alignment with UK-France-Germany discussions on the issue. The UK government is now preparing to discuss Gaza at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

While the US president has made several public statements about his relationship with the UK, this trip offered Starmer valuable face time with Trump.
