Haiti’s government has condemned the killing of over 180 people by gangs, which allegedly targeted elderly residents and Voodoo adherents in Port-au-Prince. The violence began when gang leader Micanor “Mikanò” Altès blamed Voodoo practitioners for his child’s grave illness.
According to reports, Altès ordered the killings on December 6 and 7, using machetes and knives to kill at least 60 elderly individuals on Friday, followed by another 50 on Saturday. The victims were left mutilated in the streets.
The United Nations has estimated that over 5,000 people have died in Haiti this year due to gang violence.
The transitional government has promised to find and bring the perpetrators to justice, calling it a “red line” that must be crossed. The international community has been urged to provide more support to the multinational policing force sent to Haiti.
Gangs under the Viv Ansamn banner have been ravaging Port-au-Prince for the past year, attacking state institutions and forcing hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee their homes.
