Astronomers have been tracking asteroid 2024 YR4 since its discovery in December 2024. Early calculations showed it could pass close to Earth in December 2032, but new data suggests the impact zone may shift to the Moon instead.
The James Webb Space Telescope has helped refine YR4’s trajectory, which now indicates a lunar strike is possible. If this happens, it could generate hundreds of meteors visible each hour, creating a meteor storm. The team expects about 10% of the ejected debris to reach Earth, producing dimmer meteors.
While the chances of impact are low, at around 4%, continued observations are improving predictions for years to come. This potential event has sparked interest among astronomers and satellite operators who must prepare for the possibility of increased space debris in the atmosphere.
