Google Launches AI-Driven Search Feature in the UK

Google is introducing a new search feature in the UK that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to generate results, marking a significant shift for the search engine giant. The “AI Mode” will provide users with answers written in a conversational style, containing fewer links to other pages.

The new tool is optional and will appear as both a tab and an option within the search box. It’s being rolled out in response to changes in how people use Google search, such as asking more complicated questions. For example, instead of searching for “clean carpet stain,” users are now likely to ask “I spilled coffee on my Berber carpet, I’m looking for a cleaner that is pet friendly.”

Experts predict this move will increasingly incorporate AI into search engines, raising concerns among organizations and firms that rely on search traffic. Some businesses have seen a 50% decline in clicks from Google search results since the introduction of AI Overview features.

Google’s product manager, Hema Budaraju, says people are using these technologies to unlock new information-seeking journeys, allowing users to express questions more naturally. However, there are concerns about the impact on news organizations and advertising revenue.

The tool uses Google’s Gemini AI platform and has already been launched in the US and India. It will be rolled out in the UK over the next few days. While it won’t replace traditional search results entirely, it may change how people interact with search engines.
