Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg Dies at 65 After Battle with Cancer

Former President Barack Obama paid tribute to Chicago Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg, who died this week after a long battle with cancer. A five-tool player and nine-time Gold Glove winner, Sandberg was a beloved figure throughout Major League Baseball.

Obama posted a heartfelt message on X, praising Sandberg as a “class act” who never cheated the game. The former president is also a longtime White Sox fan, having invited the Cubs to visit the White House in 2016 after they won the World Series.

Sandberg’s passing was announced by Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred, who remembered him as a legend of the Chicago Cubs franchise and a frequent participant at the Hall of Fame. Despite his illness, Sandberg remained active in baseball until the end, supporting Stand Up To Cancer and continuing to be an ambassador for the Cubs.

The 65-year-old former player was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer in January 2024 but had made significant progress after undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments before a relapse in December.
