A 23-year-old woman who died after refusing chemotherapy treatment for cancer has told a court that she was “anti-vax”. Paloma Shemirani, who had non-Hodgkin lymphoma, claimed doctors’ interventions were responsible for her death. She believed alternative treatments, including Gerson therapy, could cure the disease.
Shemirani, who grew up in East Sussex, denied having cancer and described her diagnosis as “suspected” and “unconfirmed”. She feared chemotherapy would make her infertile. Her mother, also an anti-vax advocate, had previously shared COVID-19 conspiracy theories on social media.
The Royal Sussex County Hospital in Kent where Shemirani died said there was no scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of Gerson therapy as a cancer treatment. The inquest continues to investigate the appropriateness of her care and how it may have contributed to her death.
