Maggie Gauger is set to become the global brand president and CEO of Gap Inc.’s Athleta brand, succeeding Chris Blakeslee. Gauger, who was previously head of Nike’s North America women’s business, will bring over 20 years of experience in key leadership roles to the role.
Athleta has seen recent struggles with sales, with first-quarter net sales of $308 million down 6 percent from the previous year and comparable sales off 8 percent. However, Gap Inc. CEO Richard Dickson believes Gauger’s skills and experience will help accelerate the brand’s reinvigoration.
Gauger joins Athleta with a proven track record in driving business transformation and customer acquisition. She is also committed to empowering women and girls through sport, style, and culture. The new CEO stated that she is excited to bring her expertise to Athleta, a brand with a strong mission focused on the power of women.
As Gauger transitions into her role, Blakeslee will remain with the company as an adviser to support a smooth transition. The acquisition of Athleta by Gap Inc. in 2008 has positioned the brand for growth, and recent efforts to recenter the brand have been underway.
With over $1.4 billion in annual sales, Athleta operates approximately 250 stores and athleta.com, offering apparel for yoga, training, recovery, and travel. The brand’s commitment to being a certified B Corporation and designing products for women by women will continue under Gauger’s leadership.
