ChatGPT’s developer, OpenAI, has launched a new “study mode” feature aimed at promoting responsible academic use of the chatbot. The tool provides step-by-step guidance on complex subjects, helping users understand and engage with topics in a more meaningful way. This move comes as universities struggle to address the growing issue of AI misuse, with a recent survey revealing over 7,000 cases of cheating using AI tools in UK universities alone.
The study mode uses a conversational approach, asking users about their comfort level with mathematics and learning objectives before providing guidance. This focus on understanding and application sets it apart from simply serving up completed essays or answers. OpenAI emphasizes that the tool is designed to support students’ learning processes, rather than provide shortcuts.
Jayna Devani, international education lead at OpenAI, stressed that tackling academic cheating requires a broader conversation about assessment methods and guidelines for AI use. The study mode is seen as an important step forward in promoting constructive engagement with ChatGPT.
Key features of the study mode include its ability to interact with images, which can help students work through past exam papers uploaded to the chatbot. OpenAI collaborated with educators, scientists, and experts to develop this tool, acknowledging potential inconsistencies in behavior and mistakes across conversations.
