The Boston Red Sox are one step away from making a significant trade splash ahead of the 6 p.m. ET deadline, following their American League competitors Baltimore and New York. The Orioles have moved outfielder Cedric Mullins to the Mets for prospects Raimon Gomez, Anthony Nunez, and Chandler Marsh.
Mullins has spent eight years with the Orioles, showcasing his power and speed, hitting 30 home runs and stealing 30 bases as an All-Star in 2019. He’s been a solid source of offense, tallying 15 homers and 14 steals this season with a .222/.305/.433 slash line.
The move should benefit the Mets, upgrading their offense over Tyrone Taylor and boosting defense at center field over Jeff McNeil. This is the second major trade between the Orioles and Mets in a week, following left-handed relief pitcher Gregory Soto’s deal on Friday.
The Orioles are reportedly moving two more bats to the San Diego Padres, with Ryan O’Hearn and Ramon Laureano expected to be part of the deal. The Red Sox could still acquire Charlie Morton as a starting pitcher, a move that would bolster their own team.
