Microplastic Inhalation Raises Health Concerns at Home and On the Road

A recent study from the University of Toulouse, France has revealed that we inhale an alarming amount of microplastics every day. Researchers measured fine particles seven times thinner than a human hair strand in homes and cars and found 68,000 tiny particles per day. This is 100 times more than previously estimated. Microplastic exposure can cause inflammation, irritation, and potentially contribute to respiratory problems, endocrine function disruptions, and neurodevelopmental disorders.

The study used Raman Spectroscopy technology to analyze tiny particles in homes and cars. Microplastics break off from plastic objects like household items, carpets, and fabrics. Cars also release microplastics due to worn-down materials and solar irradiance. The findings highlight the need for safer indoor environments and inform choices on material usage. Further research will apply this approach to study air quality in different settings.
