More than two dozen people in Harlem have been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease, one of whom has died, according to the New York City Health Department. The cluster of cases, located in Central Harlem’s ZIP codes 10027, 10030, 10035, 10037, and 10039, is under investigation.
Residents in the area are advised to be aware of flu-like symptoms such as cough, fever, chills, muscle aches, or difficulty breathing, which could indicate Legionnaires’ disease. Officials urge anyone with these symptoms to contact their healthcare provider immediately.
Legionnaires’ disease is caused by the bacteria Legionella, which thrives in warm water systems, including cooling towers and whirlpool spas. Individuals at higher risk include those over 50, smokers, and those with chronic lung conditions or compromised immune systems.
Building owners with initial positive screening results have been instructed to fix the issue within 24 hours. The New York City Health Department is taking steps to identify and address the source of the outbreak.
Residents are advised to stay informed through local news reports and follow health guidelines to prevent further spread of the disease.
