Diet May Attract Mosquitoes, But Which Foods Repel Them?

Mosquitoes can be a nuisance during the summer months, and it’s not just a myth that their attraction is influenced by human diet. A recent review of studies published in the journal Biologia found an interesting link between what we eat and our likelihood of being targeted by mosquitoes.

Researchers have identified several factors that attract mosquitoes to humans, including genetics, skin microbiome composition, blood type, and pregnancy. The review also found that changes in body odor composition may result from consuming different dietary components.

On the other hand, certain foods can repel mosquitoes due to their sulfur or limonene content. Garlic, for example, is rich in sulfur compounds, while citrus fruits like lemon, grapefruit, and orange are high in limonene. These substances can interfere with the mosquito’s olfactory system, making them less likely to bite.

To avoid mosquito bites, it’s recommended to wear long, light-colored clothing, use mosquito repellents, maintain good hygiene, and drain standing water sources. Some people may also find relief from mosquitoes by incorporating garlic or citrus fruits into their diet.

While more research is needed to confirm the effects of diet on mosquito attraction, incorporating some simple dietary changes can be a useful addition to other preventive measures.
