Square Enix has announced Octopath Traveler 0, a new entry in the popular series, which will launch on December 4, 2025, for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game serves as a prequel to the original Octopath Traveler, drawing inspiration from its story elements and gameplay ideas.
In Octopath Traveler 0, players create their first customizable character and embark on a “journey of restoration” after their hometown of Wishvale is burned to the ground. The game features the series’ signature HD-2D visual style, turn-based battles, and a town-building feature where players can rebuild Wishvale by designing homes and other buildings.
The new game boasts over 30 recruitable party members, including fresh character backstories, full voice acting, and a revamped battle system. Although it shares story elements with Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, a free-to-play spin-off released in 2020, Octopath Traveler 0 is designed as a “full-fledged console and PC RPG” with original content.
Producer Hirohito Suzuki emphasized that the game’s name conveys the idea of players undertaking their own journey, regardless of prior experience with the series. The announcement comes after Square Enix’s first Octopath Traveler launched in 2018 and its sequel, Octopath Traveler 2, arrived in 2023. A second HD-2D title, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, was also announced during the presentation.
The game is set to be released on December 4, 2025, for all supported platforms.
