Tarrant County Commissioner Ramirez Corrects Campaign Finance Report Amid Criticism

Tarrant County Commissioner Manny Ramirez has corrected his July campaign finance report after initially reporting a $25,000 donation from Centurion American Development Group. The company is developing 836 acres in Ramirez’s district and stands to benefit from the creation of a public improvement district worth $200 million.

Ramirez claimed the donation was due to a “clerical error.” However, experts say that even if it’s attributed to a business account, donations must come from personal funds. Campaign finance laws prohibit corporate donations directly to candidates.

The recent donation follows previous gifts from Moayedi, who has donated hundreds of thousands to prominent Republicans. The commissioner could face consequences for accepting the donation, but returning the check and making a new donation under his own name would be an easier remedy.

Texas allows unlimited individual contributions to politicians unless they are judges or judicial candidates. However, Jones, a political science professor, notes that corporate donations help maintain transparency and prevent undue influence from companies and labor unions.
