Record-Breaking Stick Insect Discovered in Australian Rainforest

Scientists have discovered a massive new species of stick insect in Australia’s Wet Tropics region, which is believed to be the heaviest ever found in the country. The Acrophylla alta measures 40 centimeters long and weighs 44 grams, equivalent to a golf ball.

This discovery was made possible by the identification of distinctive eggs, which led researchers to classify the insect as a new species. According to James Cook University’s Angus Emmott, the remote habitat may have contributed to its relative obscurity. “Their body mass likely helps them survive colder conditions,” he said.

The Acrophylla alta is found in a small area of high-altitude rainforest and lives in the canopy. This rare insect remains largely unseen by humans due to its isolated environment.

Two specimens have been added to the Queensland Museum collection for future research purposes.
