Delta Flight Hit Severe Turbulence Over Wyoming, Lands Safely in Minnesota

A Delta flight from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam experienced severe turbulence on Wednesday, sending service carts and unbelted passengers into the air. The plane was diverted to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, where 25 people on board were taken to hospitals for evaluation and care.

The turbulence hit over an area of southwestern Wyoming, which had been identified as a potential trouble spot by federal aviation forecasters earlier in the day. Crew members and passengers were shaken, with some describing it as the roughest flight they’ve ever taken.

“It truly thought the plane was going to go down,” said Joseph Carbone, a passenger on board. “I watched as a flight attendant just about crashed into the ceiling.”

The pilot apologized over the intercom, explaining that they were flying above an altitude where most storms hit and the turbulence was unexpected. Passengers were injured, including those who weren’t wearing seat belts.

Twenty-five passengers were taken to area hospitals for evaluation and care. Seven crew members also received medical attention after landing. All customers who were evaluated have since been released.

Aviation authorities are investigating the incident, with the National Transportation Safety Board expected to release a preliminary report in about a month. The FAA has confirmed that the plane landed safely and will be investigating as well.
