Arab and Muslim states including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt have issued a joint call for Hamas to disarm and relinquish power in the Gaza Strip as part of efforts to end the war in the territory. The 22-member Arab League, along with 17 countries, supported a declaration signed at a United Nations conference co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and France.
The declaration, which was endorsed by various international organizations including the European Union, calls for Hamas to end its rule in Gaza and hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority. It also proposes the deployment of a temporary international stabilization mission upon invitation by the PA and under the aegis of the United Nations.
France described the declaration as “unprecedented,” while Qatar and Egypt maintained their ties with Hamas throughout the war. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum commended the declaration, stating that kidnapping innocent civilians is a blatant violation of international law.
Saudi Arabia has repeatedly pushed for a revival of the two-state solution, which includes the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. France has announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state in September, although this has been met with opposition from Israel and the United States.
