Thousands of fans paid their respects to late Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne as his hearse made its way through Birmingham city center, accompanied by his tearful family and police escort. The 76-year-old metal icon passed away last Tuesday.
Osbourne’s legacy is deeply rooted in the city where he grew up and formed the world-conquering heavy metal band Black Sabbath in 1968. Fans of all ages gathered to pay tribute to the musician, including long-time fan Antony Hunt, who described it as an “emotional” day.
Birmingham City Council hailed Osbourne as a cherished son, saying he never forgot his working-class roots and kept his Brummie accent throughout his career. The band was recently awarded the Freedom of the City in recognition of their services to Birmingham.
Osbourne’s impact on heavy metal is immeasurable, with Black Sabbath selling over 75 million albums worldwide. He will be remembered for his iconic stage antics, solo career, and reality show “The Osbournes,” which found him a new legion of fans alongside Sharon and his children. A private funeral was held for the musician, but his city remains to honor his memory through music and tributes.
