Flesh-Eating Bacteria on the Rise in Louisiana, Experts Warn

A flesh-eating bacteria found in warm coastal waters is spreading rapidly across Louisiana, hospitalizing 17 people and killing four this year. According to Dr. Theresa Sokol, a state epidemiologist, the risk of infection is increasing due to rising temperatures.

Vibrio Vulnificus thrives in brackish or saltwater, which can cause severe illness and death if not treated promptly. The bacteria can be contracted through open wounds exposed to contaminated water or by eating raw seafood.

Those who are immunocompromised or have chronic health conditions such as liver disease, cancer, diabetes, or take medication for stomach acid are at a higher risk of severe illness or death. Dr. Sokol advises people to avoid contact with brackish or saltwater and wash wounds thoroughly if they come into contact with contaminated water.

If symptoms develop, it’s crucial to seek medical attention immediately and inform healthcare providers about exposure to the bacteria. With 20-25% of infected individuals dying from the infection, awareness is key to preventing these deadly cases.
