Canada has announced plans to recognize Palestine as a state at the upcoming UN General Assembly, following similar moves by the UK and France. The decision was made by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in a statement on Wednesday.
Carney stated that recognition is dependent on the Palestinian Authority’s commitment to reforms, including holding general elections in 2026 without Hamas involvement, and demilitarizing the state. He also emphasized Canada’s support for Israel’s existence as an independent state, while recognizing its right to security and peace.
However, the decision has been met with criticism from Israeli authorities, who have described it as a “reward for Hamas.” The Israeli Foreign Ministry stated that the change in Canadian policy harms efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and release hostages.
The United States is not among countries that recognize Palestine as a state. Canada’s move comes amid pressure on Israel to allow more aid into Gaza, with other European nations also recognizing a Palestinian state.
