Golden Bachelor Star Regrets Ageist Comments and Apology

Mel Owens, star of “The Golden Bachelor” Season 2, has expressed regret over comments he made about age limits for contestants on the show. In a recent interview with Glamour, Owens admitted that his views were “unfair,” “insensitive,” and a “mistake.” He acknowledged that he would have cut women over 60 from the show and urged producers to avoid casting those with artificial hips or wigs.

Owens said he apologized to contestants during filming and aims to earn back their trust. In an earlier podcast appearance, he stated that he prefers contestants who are in good shape and fit. The 66-year-old is seeking someone “who’s a lifetime learner, enjoys life, works out, eats well, and stays energetic.” Owens succeeds Gerry Turner as the Golden Bachelor and hopes to prove himself after his predecessor’s short-lived marriage ended in divorce just three months after the show’s debut.

“The Golden Bachelor” Season 2 premieres on September 24 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
