Romania narrowly avoided a major crisis after allegations of “massive” and “aggressive” meddling by Moscow in its presidential election. The eleventh-hour cancellation of the vote was sparked by claims that far-right candidate Calin Georgescu, who won the first round, received significant support from Russian agents.
Former NATO deputy Mircea Geoana says Russia’s tactics are sophisticated, but “it’s hugely mistaken to believe all of this was just because of Russia”. The campaign played on fears about Ukraine and refugees, whipping up resentment among the population. However, it is unclear whether Georgescu knew he was being used by Moscow.
Analysts point out that many of his stated positions align with Putin’s agenda, making him a useful pawn in Russia’s hybrid war on Romania. Russian drones have crashed over the border, fueling concerns about being drawn into Ukraine’s conflict.
As authorities investigate claims of covert campaigning and potential Russian interference, Georgescu’s supporters remain determined to see justice served. The country is now on high alert, with many fearing a repeat of the crisis if action is not taken soon.
