Chile Mine Collapse: Death Toll Rises to Two

A deadly earthquake triggered a copper mine collapse in central Chile’s O’Higgins region, trapping five workers. The accident has left two people dead and nine injured, with rescue efforts ongoing. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse, which occurred after a 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck the area on Thursday.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric has vowed to do everything in his power to find the missing miners, while the state-run mining company Codelco is working to clear debris and locate the trapped workers. The mine’s general manager stated that the accident was not caused by explosives, but the investigation is ongoing.

Rescue workers face a significant challenge, as 20 meters of debris must be removed to reach where they believe the men are trapped. As of Friday, only four meters had been cleared, and the situation has become increasingly dire for the families of the missing miners.
