Saugus Speedway Demolition Marks End of Local Racing Tradition

The once-thriving Saugus Speedway is set to be demolished and replaced with a 320-home development, leaving behind only a faded sign and piles of cut-down trees. The speedway, which was owned by the Bonelli family, had been a staple for local racing events and swap meets. Its final race took place in 1995, citing safety concerns over the grandstands. The venue’s popularity waned after the removal of the grandstands in 2012.

The Saugus Speedway property will be divided into five parcels, featuring 22 low-income housing units and a warehouse space for commercial use. Lennar Corp., a leading real estate company, is behind the project. The development is expected to bring significant change to the area, with homes ranging from $594,000 to $1.4 million.

The speedway’s swap meet had become a popular destination for locals and out-of-towners alike, offering affordable merchandise and entertainment. Its final event took place in October last year, marking the end of an era for the community. As the project moves forward, local residents will be watching with interest to see how it transforms the area.
